Project in focus: BELSIZE

Callendar Howarth came to us with a very clear brief of what their client wanted to achieve from their kitchen; a cosy, stylish family home complete with the latest smart home technology.

To do justice to this immaculate refurbishment in North London we went back to the drawing board and designed a new door detail, which we’ve coined the slab shaker. This door detail doesn’t sit within a traditional shaker frame which allows for a more delicate and contemporary rectangular finish to the door.

Slab shaker is perhaps not the most refined name for this classic detailing on a contemporary manufacturing method, but you’ll forgive a South African for saying like it is!

The timber cabinetry was painted in a personal favourite of mine; Paint & Paper Library Slate IV. The oak internal detailing within the units gave warmth and texture to the pallet.

A quartz composite, Ceasarstone Calacatta Nuvo, was chosen for the worktops and backsplash.

Being a family kitchen it was important that the finishes would be robust enough to survive the inevitable abuse levied upon it by enthusiastic younger members of the family. For this reason, the enticingly sunny window seat was upholstered in faux leather. Fabulously luxurious and on point, yet I’d go as far as to say Weetabix proof!

Spot the difference

We love to play with materiality and add a touch of the unexpected to our kitchens. We like to think of it as an injection of personality.

The art is to introduce these flourishes with enough subtlety that one isn’t immediately drawn to the point of difference, but with enough confidence that the gaze is given a reason to remain drawn to the scheme.

Only a keen eye would notice that the cabinetry hardware is in-fact a mix of two distinct styles, both finished in lacquered burnished brass to offer a cohesive finish to the kitchen.

The Jaspette handle, shown on the right, has a softer curved profile in contrast to the sharper angled Edgbaston handle, both from Armac Martin.

Overall this kitchen delivers a calm, soothing vibe and the beautiful blend of classic detailing and contemporary finishes allows this one-of-a-kind kitchen to sit comfortably within its period home.
