Project in focus: STERNDALE

Bold uses of colour and a palette of natural materials make for a youthful yet classy home in West London.

This family spend lots of time in the kitchen entertaining and preparing meals. Therefore, they wanted to make sure that the new space would be hard-wearing and functional without losing aesthetic appeal.

These classic Gubi lights, with their rotating shades, are a fun and versatile addition to the space.

For the central island and kitchen splashback, a beautifully tactile Arabescato marble was sourced directly from an Italian quarry. The deep veining within the stone brings movement and energy to the scheme.

In contrast to the high gloss finish of the marble, warmth and texture were introduced through the use of oak cabinetry.

A particularly unusual detail within the home is a traditional wood stove that takes pride of place in the dining space.

This statuesque antique was sourced from the client’s village in Austria and was lovingly refurbished to run on electricity. As such, it offers an atmospheric heat source to support the underfloor heating.

The vivid aquamarine tiles on the stove inspired the colour palette used throughout the ground floor. It seems quite fitting that this little slice of an Austrian childhood inspires the home of the next generation.

The choice of flooring is a personal favourite of mine; poured concrete.

Separating the external doors and the oriel window, the rawness of the flooring choice is complemented by a feature column of peachy-hued Tadelakt - an ancient yet increasingly popular form of polished plaster.

Small details in this scheme tie the home together beautifully.

For example, when considering the spice rack we spent time with the client discussing which herbs, spices and bottles were most frequently used. We then designed a rack that would best cater to these needs. A small detail, but one that has a material impact on the day-to-day usability of the kitchen.

In the hallway coat store, we reintroduced the oak veneers used in the kitchen to create a cohesive look and feel to the spaces.

We particularly love these bold statement coat hooks which, hung in this irregular pattern, become a work of art.

We do hope that you've enjoyed finding out more about this project.
